The Emotional Hangover

Nobody warns you about it until you are already in the thick of it.

Some may say it’s the lifestyle’s best-kept secret, although I wouldn’t consider this a secret most want to know as much as they should know.

In the preparation phase, there’s a significant amount of time dedicated to logistics, boundary setting, and the exhilarating unpredictability of a weekend in the lifestyle. The adrenaline rushes through your system, and for 48 hours, you exist entirely outside your usual reality.

And then, Monday morning comes.

The alarm goes off, the coffee needs to be made, and the sheer, blinding weight of the vanilla routine comes crashing back down.

In the BDSM community, they call it “sub drop.” In the broader lifestyle, I just call it the emotional hangover. It is that sudden, inexplicable wave of irritability, exhaustion, or even melancholy that hits a day or two after an incredible experience. If you aren’t prepared for it, it can convince you that something is terribly wrong.

I remember the first few times it happened to me. I woke up feeling strangely disconnected with an unhappy demeanor. The questions swirled through my mind. Did we go too far? Is this jealousy? Are we cracking our foundation? I found myself searching for a problem with me, or my relationship. The reality was, I was just experiencing a biological chemical crash.

Years in, Jared and I can recognize these days for exactly what they are. We don’t try to force deep, emotional debriefs on a Tuesday when our serotonin is depleted. Instead, we lean hard into the absolute most mundane parts of our vanilla routine.

For us, the remedy is quiet closeness. It’s the repetitive, grounding rhythm of every day life. It’s focusing on personal wellness, family togetherness and sometimes just enjoying the silence. We actively shift from the high-voltage energy of the weekend back to the steady, quiet hum of our daily life.

If you happen to be sitting in the middle of a post-weekend crash right now, here is my only piece of advice: give yourself some grace.

Do not over-analyze your relationship status on a Tuesday. Do not mistake a simple dopamine crash for a red flag. Just drink some water, lean into your most boring, comforting routines, and let the dust settle.

The thrill of the lifestyle is an incredible escape, but it’s the quiet, steady reality of the days in between that actually holds it all together.
